With summertime comes a heatwave and that's the perfect time to make and serve a batch of these delicious macerated berry granola frozen yogurt bars. A simple three-layer dessert bar that is filled with flavor, texture, and is pretty healthy too! You'll love how easy this is to make and the fact that kids and adults alike will devour them.
Berry Frozen Yogurt Bars
We've probably all made some manner of homemade ice pop or frozen bar in our lifetime, but sometimes you just want something a little bit extra. This recipe uses a combination of homemade granola, a simple berry compote, and creamy yogurt to create a delightful no-bake dessert.
If you prefer to bake something for dessert with berries in it, you might like this easy blueberry cream hand pie or strawberry cheesecake hand pie recipe. Both are simple, delicious, and oh, so very easy to make.
Are Frozen Yogurt Bars Healthy?
Yes! While not all versions are what I would consider healthy, this version is definitely a great option that has no added sugar but instead uses natural things like applesauce, maple syrup, and the berries themselves.
While you may have individual dietary restrictions, a serving of these frozen berry bars is unlikely to be considered unhealthy in your dietary program. Just make sure the ingredients are suitable for your personal needs and enjoy them with zero guilt!
What Yogurt is Best for Freezing?
While this recipe includes Greek yogurt, you can also use plain yogurt for a similar result. They both freeze wonderfully. The option to use Greek yogurt is due to the thickness as well as the added protein. With a higher amount of protein in that particular type of yogurt, it can be not just a treat, but the addition of healthy protein into your daily meal plan.
Can I Use Other Fruits for This Dessert?
You sure can! I love using blueberries the best, but you can use almost any fruit for this dessert. Some options that I find best with this are listed below, but you can get creative and make them with your own combination of fruits if you prefer.
- Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or strawberries.
- Mango, pineapple, guava, papaya, or dragonfruit.
- Peaches, pears, apples, or plums.
Berries are definitely my favorite choice, but you can test out other fruits in small batches to find your preference when making these yummy bars!
Can I Use a Different Nut Butter?
The granola base of this recipe includes almond butter for a binder. While it will add a little bit different flavor to the recipe, you can also make it with peanut butter, cashew butter, sunflower butter, or even macadamia nut butter.
Do I Have to Add the Granola in These Fruit Yogurt Bars?
You don't have to have a granola base, but it does add to the overall yumminess of the recipe. If preferred, you can make just the two layers of yogurt and berries. An alternative would be to use a cookie crust base like Graham crackers or vanilla wafers instead. They too would add a yummy texture and flavor but would be a bit more sugar to consider.
How Long are Homemade Frozen Yogurt Bars Good For?
These homemade bars are best eaten within 2 weeks of freezing. While they may have a longer shelf-life, they tend to easily get freezer burn and taken on an aftertaste that isn't always pleasant. So, when making them, keep in mind how many you can eat within a 2 week period and reduce the recipe if needed.
