I love a good cookie, and this idea is perfect for Valentine's Day. These Valentine's Day candy box sugar cookies are a perfectly fun little treat! Ideal for gifting or sharing with friends, this is an easy way to dress up a basic cookie. Whether you make homemade sugar cookie dough or pick up a package of store-bought dough, this is easy to assemble treat that everyone will rave over seeing.
Valentine's Day Candy Box Sugar Cookies
If you enjoy a good sugar cookie, this is a great choice to turn that basic cookie into a lovely treat. The base of a sugar cookie makes it very easy to make even if baking isn't something you are good at managing. This is really all about the steps of decorating, and since there is no right or wrong with this look, you can mess up a little and nobody will know.
If you want more Valentine's Day treats, you'll love our strawberry cake mix cookies as an easy choice that is still pretty but easier to make. You can go even further and make Valentine cream cheese cookie bars that are easy to simply slice and serve rather than form into individual cookies before baking. I'm always looking for a shortcut that keeps things tasty and beautiful!
Can I Use a Packaged Valentine's Day Sugar Cookies Dough Instead?
Absolutely! One of the best parts of this recipe is that you can use any sugar cookie dough. I recommend a "no spread" dough that won't expand a lot, but that includes most of the refrigerated dough you'll find in the grocery store. If you don't have time to whip up a batch of our sugar cookie dough recipe, then you can use any preferred brand you find in store, including the dry mix you just add oil and eggs into to make.
What Candies Can I Put Inside These Candy Box Cookies?
Since the cookies aren't large, you'll want to put a little treat like sprinkles or small candies. While I use tons of different cookies and candy crumbs, I always go back to sprinkles. Below are some ideas that would fit into these boxes nicely.
- Crushed hard candy pieces like Lifesavers, Jolly Ranchers, or other peppermints.
- Crushed cookies like OREO cookies
- Mini candy pieces or bits like Heath bits, Butterfinger bits, or similar candy bar bits.
- Sprinkles in holiday or party themes.
If you want to add something unique to your sprinkles, I recommend going to Etsy and taking a look at the fun sprinkle blends you can find there. So many fit unique party themes, holidays, and seasons. Below are some of my favorite blends for cookies like these.
- Classic Valentine's Day Sprinkle Blend
- Rose Gold Sprinkle Blend
- Romance Sprinkle Mix
- Pink Moon and Stars Sprinkle Mix
- Pink Roses and Baubles Sprinkle Mix
- Rainbow Sweetheart Sprinkle Mix
- Love is in the Air Sprinkle Mix
- Pink Heart Sprinkles
- Purple Heart Sprinkle Mix
- Keeper of the Hearts Sprinkle Mix
Fun Ways to Gift Valentine's Day Cookies
Giving these cookies as a gift to friends and family is one of my favorite things to do. It's so fun to make something special and truly make it with love. When you gift them, the receiver knows that you put true effort into the gift. That makes it so much better for both the giver and the receiver! Below are some fun ideas for gifting these cookies.
- Stack together and wrap in cellophane then tie with a red or pink bow.
- Place in a cookie tin lined with Valentine's Day tissue paper.
- Add to a skewer or lollipop stick and place in a candy or cookie bouquet.
- Serve at a Valentine's Day party on the dessert buffet surrounded by iced cookies.
- Stack together and tie with a red and white piece of twine.
How do I Store These Cookies?
These cookies are good for 4-5 days at room temperature when stored in an airtight container or bag. If unable to eat them all within that time period, you can refrigerate these for 7-10 days. The cookie dough can be frozen up to 3 months in most cases. While you can make and assemble them in advance, I do not recommend freezing these fully assembled as the layers would be subject to breaking easily. Instead, bake the individual cookies before layering, and store them in the freezer then thaw overnight at room temperature before decorating.
What Do I Need to Make Valentine's Sugar Cookie Boxes?

How to Make Valentine's Day Candy Box Sugar Cookies
Preheat your oven according to cookie dough directions, and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Prepare cookie dough according to directions if making from scratch, or open your package of cookie dough.
On a clean surface, lightly dust an area with all-purpose flour, then roll the cookie dough out to ¼" thickness.
Use 2 different heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies.
For each candy box cookie, you will need 2 whole cookies, and 1 cookie with the center cut out.
Place the cookies onto the lined baking sheets and bake as directed, or until set and just barely browning.
Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheet for 30 minutes.
Prepare icing, if making your own. Icing should be the thickness of glue.
Assembling Candy Box Sugar Cookies
Using icing as glue around the edges of the cookies, place one whole cookie on your work surface and add icing around the edges then place a cut out cookie on top creating an open space in the middle.
Add a small amount of icing in the center and add sprinkles inside.
For a taller cookie box, stack two whole cookies together, then repeat the same process of adding the top open cookie and sprinkles inside.
To make a sandwich-style cookie filled with sprinkles, place a whole cookie, then an open cookie, and top with a second whole cookie.
Add sprinkles between the cookies and seal with icing around the edges.
You may also simply icing and add sprinkles to cookies if desired.

Chef's Tip
When rolling out cookies for recipes like this, I like to use a Joseph adjustable rolling pin. It's a great choice for getting exact thickness throughout the entire sheet of dough. They are simple to use and clean and ideal for every kitchen.
