Handy Kitchen Tools
How to Make a Stuffed Pizza Bun
Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the buns on the parchment paper and cut each bun ¾ of the way down the bun, leaving the bottom intact, in half, then turning, and cutting again, until you have 8 slices, just like a pie.
Spread the pizza sauce into the sliced areas and center of the bun so it is nicely coated in each slice.
Fold large pieces of pepperoni or salami in half, then tuck one piece into each slit on the bread.
Next, cut or fold slices of mozzarella cheese to fit into each slot on the bread.
Tuck additional cheese into the center if desired.
Sprinkle the top of the bun with dried oregano or Italian herbs.
Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and it has begun to brown on top.
Serve immediately with additional pizza sauce for dipping.
Frequently Asked Questions
When you are making these pepperoni stuffed pizza buns you want to use a crusty roll or a baguette. You want something that will hold up to the sauce and the cheese and will give that pizza crust-style texture and flavor. A French bread roll is a great option for this recipe.
Mozzarella is the go-to choice when making anything to do with pizza, but it isn't the only choice. Other options include Italian cheese blends, gouda, fontina, cheddar, Colby Jack, or provolone. You could also use a pepper jack for more heat, or even just a sprinkle of Parmesan on top.
You can replace the pepperoni with salami, sausage, ham, Canadian bacon, or chicken if you prefer.
While these are good for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator before serving, I find that it's best to just make them right when you want them. Since they only take about 15 minutes from start to finish, it's really easy to make just as many as you need when you want to serve them.
Pizza freezes amazingly well and that includes these pepperoni stuffed pizza bun. You can assemble the stuffed pizza bun and then wrap it well in plastic. Once wrapped you can place it into a freezer bag or freezer container. Lable and date it then freezes for up to a month for best results. It can store for up to three months but tends to change the texture some so I prefer eating within one month.
When ready to serve, bake for 10 to 15 minutes longer to cook through, or let thaw overnight in the refrigerator and follow the baking directions above.
Variations of Pizza Bun Flavors
This recipe is super easy to make and definitely a great option just as listed, but you may want to mix things up a bit to create unique pizza options for you and your family.
- Swap out the pepperoni for any typical topping such as ham, hamburger, sausage, Canadian bacon, bacon, or chicken.
- Create a taco pizza bun using taco sauce, seasoned meat, cheese, and serving with sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes.
- Use barbeuce sauce instead of pizza sauce with grilled chicken, red onions, and cheese for a barbeuce chicken pizza.
- Make the pizza vegetarian with different favorite veggies such as bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, jalapeno, corn, or zucchini.
- Use Alfredo sauce, spinach, mushrooms, and chicken for an Alfredo pizza style bun.
- Replace the sauce with garlic herbed butter and brush inside the bun then stuff with cheese for a cheesy bread style bun.
