Hot Cream Cheese Sausage Dip
Growing up, this recipe was one that we had at almost every holiday party. It was always right next to the basic queso and used as a little heartier option for a snack or served alongside sandwiches.

What Do You Use to Dip Into This Sausage Dip?
This is an easy dip to serve because there are several things that you can use as dippers. I love to serve this with crackers because everyone loves crackers, and there are so many different types and flavors. It works best with a thicker cracker like the Ritz or Triscuit style cracker but can be great with simple crunchy breadsticks or a whole-wheat cracker.
Of course, a tortilla chip or even a thick potato chip works great with this dip. I have often also used this to go into a bread bowl with toasted French or Italian bread and larger croutons or even bagel chips. I have served with homemade pita chips or even these yummy garlic cheese knots.
You can also use veggies if you want something lighter. Carrots, celery, and cucumbers are good choices. Sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower, and radishes can also be used for dipping.

Handy Kitchen Tools
Note: if making in a slow cooker instead of on the stovetop, I recommend using slow cooker liners for easy cleanup.
How to Make Sausage Dip
If needed, remove casings from the sausage, then heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Once the skillet is hot, add in the sausage and use a wooden spoon or spatula to break it up.
Cook the sausage for 5 to 7 minutes, or until it is cooked through and no more pink is showing.
Once the sausage is cooked, if desired, you can drain off any excess grease. Then, add in the cubed cream cheese and tomato sauce. I used a can of stewed tomatoes for more texture.
Stir this together and continue cooking for 3 or 4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and everything is combined well.
Serve this dip hot with crackers, chips, or vegetables.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am using Italian sausage in my dip. It tends to be the most common sausage used however, you don't have to stick to that.
For a little different flavor profile, you can use breakfast sausage as well. Spicy hot sausage would put a nice twist on the dip. Another favorite is good Mexican chorizo for extra spiciness and depth of flavor.
Other options include any chicken or turkey sausage if you want something leaner. Just reach for a sausage that is ground rather than formed such as kielbasa would be.
Yes, this dip is fantastic to make in the slow cooker. It takes the work away so that you do not need to watch over it and it also is a great way to keep the dip warm while you serve it.
To make it in the slow cooker, brown the sausage then put it into the cooker with the cheese and tomato. Set on low and let cook for 1 to 2 hours incorporate and stir well before serving.
This sausage dip will be good for about 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. After that, it will start to dry out and not be as flavorful. If you want to make it ahead of time, I would recommend making it the day before and then reheating it when you are ready to serve it.
No, I would not recommend freezing this dip. While it can be frozen, it will end up watery and with an unpleasant texture once thawed. It's just not as good when reheated if frozen first.
