Vegetable Pizza Bun
Any shortcut in the kitchen is wanted for those who have limited time and want something tasty and homemade. These little pizza buns were recently shared a lot on TikTok and became a family favorite snack. While this particular version may have different toppings than you would usually use, it's mostly about the process as a tip for you to make your own.
Customize your pizza bun with different fillings and even use something like our homemade pasta sauce for more flavor. Make these as a snack, for kids' lunch boxes, or as a meal where everyone gets to customize their own pizza bun!

Kitchen Tools I Used
- Cutting board - I like having different colors for different items to prevent contamination issues.
- Chef's knife - my personal favorite is the WÜSTHOF 8" chef's knife, but the price may be out of range for most home cooks. Instead, you can't go wrong with a starter knife like the Cuisinart 8" chefs knife.
- Serrated knife
- Small baking dish - Pyrex is my go-to since they usually also have lids to fit for convenience.
- Parchment paper
You may also want to invest in a few small ramekins or bowls to hold ingredients while you prepare things ahead of time. Any bowl works, but I like these little ramekins with lids so I can prep in advance.
How to Make a Vegetable Pizza Bun
Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a small baking dish with parchment paper.
Prepare the onion, tomato, and bell pepper by cutting them into small pieces and setting them aside.
Slice the top of the bun off making a flat surface.
Scoop out the bulk of the inside of the bun and discard. These are great to save for making homemade breadcrumbs with later!
Add 1 tablespoon ketchup inside each bun. You can use pizza sauce or add Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or dried oregano here as well.
Layer in each bun, 1 tablespoon each of chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, chopped tomato, and corn.
Top each bun with a sprinkle of oregano and shredded cheese.
Place on the top rack of the oven and bake for 10 minutes or until the bun is heated through and the cheese is melted and starting to brown on top.
Serve hot with additional cheese if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any crusty bread bun will work for this. The crusty exterior will hold up best when you fill it with ingredients and bake. This is not meant to be made with a dinner roll or a hamburger bun.
Absolutely! This mix of vegetables is a favorite for some, but you may prefer to add just cooked sausage, pepperoni, or seasoned cooked ground beef and cheese. You can add any vegetable, meat, or cheese topping you might normally add to pizza.
No. With the addition of oregano on top and the flavor of the onions and peppers, it is very flavorful. However, if you prefer, any tomato sauce, pasta sauce, or pizza sauce can be used instead. Alternately, you could add spices to your ketchup for more flavor.
Yes! If you want to make this recipe in the air fryer, you just need to preheat the air fryer to 400°F (or highest setting if it doesn't go to 400°F.) You would then air fry the pizza buns for 5 to 6 minutes or until it has heated through and the cheese has melted.

Tips for Storing Pizza Buns
You can absolutely make these ahead of time to cook when ready, or simply reheat before serving.
Wrap the bun in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container with a lid then place in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply pop into the oven for 4 to 5 minutes for the microwave for 1 minute.
Yes. You can freeze these both before and after they have been baked. If freezing before baking, make sure to wrap them well with plastic wrap so the toppings stay inside when placed in the freezer. Otherwise, let the buns cool completely, then wrap in plastic wrap and slide into a dated and labeled freezer storage bag or airtight freezer container.
