Chocolate Breakfast Bread
When you want that special treat for breakfast, you need this chocolate breakfast bread. This "Uncrustable" style sandwich is loaded with chocolate, sealed together, and then deep-fried for a crispy exterior. Who could ask for anything more?
I am a big fan of chocolate for breakfast. While typically, that just means I have one of these milk chocolate hot chocolate bombs, I also love things like these triple chocolate muffins. My favorite, however, is this hazelnut chocolate smoothie bowl. So tasty!
What Should I Serve With This?
While I immediately think of this as a great sweet dish to go with some oven-baked bacon, I know some people may be thinking about what to go on top of the chocolate bread. Don't worry, I have you covered with both sides of the food coin!
To create a full meal, you'll want to add protein to this dish. As mentioned above, bacon is great, as are ham, Canadian bacon, sausages of all kinds, or even some peanut butter. Another great source of protein and calcium is this Instant Pot yogurt. Or you could whip up a strawberry avocado smoothie to serve on the side.
And if you want to top your chocolate bread like you would a pancake or waffle, I have some ideas for that too! A drizzle of maple syrup or chocolate syrup can be great. I love dusting with powdered sugar, and of course, a bit of homemade whipped cream never fails to please.
Ingredients

How to Make Fried Chocolate Breakfast Bread
In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs then set them aside.
Crush the cornflakes and pour them into a shallow bowl and set them aside.
Using a round cookie cutter or glass, cut each slice of bread into a circle. Discard the crusts, or save them to make homemade breadcrumbs at another time.
Use a rolling pin to flatten each round of bread.
Brush a bit of the egg mixture onto the outer edge of each slice of bread.
Then, place a square of chocolate on top of 3 of the bread rounds.
Top with the second slice of bread, and crimp the edges together with your fingers or a fork.
Heat vegetable oil in a small skillet over medium heat.
Then dip your bread rounds into the egg mixture.
And into the cornflakes until well coated.
Fry in the hot oil for 1 to 2 minutes per side just until they are nice and crisp and golden brown.
Repeat until you have fried all of the chocolate-stuffed bread.
Then serve with powdered sugar or syrup!
Frequently Asked Questions
You can use whatever bread you have at home for chocolate breakfast bread. I tend to use white bread for this recipe because I like the taste and texture, but I have seen it made with wheat or even multigrain.
You can even use leftover rolls, like hamburger rolls for this recipe. The rolls are thicker, typically, so I would smash them down to make them as flat as possible before filling and frying.
For this, I prefer mild milk chocolate, but you can use any kind of chocolate you have on hand or prefer. You could even use your favorite candy bar or melting chocolate. Chocolate chips work well too and can be fun to experiment with since they have so many flavor options available now. Don't limit yourself to just plain chocolate. You can use flavored chocolate or chocolate and peanut butter or chocolate and caramel.
I love the crunchy coating that is on this chocolate breakfast bread. It brings it all together. What kind of crumbs you use is entirely up to you.
You can use crushed cornflakes as I did, or other cereals that you have on hand. Remember that when frying, some sugars will burn faster, so something like frosted flakes or a chocolate cocoa pebbles cereal would need to be cooked carefully so it doesn't burn.
You can use breadcrumbs or panko breading if you want something neutral, but it will not get as nice a texture as the already crispy cereal would for this recipe.
