How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Donut Twists
This dough takes minutes to make, so you can preheat your oven just before you start preparing it. This will bake at 325°F/160°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat, and set it aside until later.
To save time, you can also whisk together the sugar and cinnamon for the topping and set it aside, as well as whisk the egg and milk together for the eggwash. Both of these will be used just before and after baking.
Make the donut dough by combining plain Greek yogurt with self-rising flour. This will form a sticky dough. If it is too sticky to roll, you can add additional flour by the tablespoon until it is workable.
Now, cut this dough into 6 pieces, and then roll each piece into a long rope.
Next, you will take the rope of dough and twist it around itself. I simply fold the rope in half and cross the pieces over each other then pinch the end to secure the dough. Do this with all 6 ropes of dough.
Now, place these on the baking sheet and brush the tops with the egg wash.
Pop this into the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until your dough is golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the donuts from the oven, and brush with melted butter. Then roll into or sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture you made earlier.
These are best served hot, and fresh from the oven, but can be served at room temperature. If possible, serve them with a chocolate or caramel dipping sauce to make them extra special.
Frequently Asked Questions
While both donuts and crullers are fried dough, there are a few key differences between them. First, donuts are made with a sweeter dough that often contains yeast. Crullers, on the other hand, are made with a less sweet dough. They can be made with various types of dough, including choux pastry, yeasted dough, or cake batter. Second, donuts are typically round with a hole in the center, while crullers are twisted or braided. Finally, donuts are usually glazed or coated with a sweet icing, while crullers are often left uncoated.
This recipe is a uniquely different dough made with 2 ingredients, rolled, twisted, and baked. While it is called a donut, many would not consider it a true donut or cruller.
Yes, you can make these cinnamon donut twists ahead of time. Simply make sure you store them in an airtight container to keep them from going stale.
Homemade donuts are best eaten the day they’re made. However, they will stay fresh for a few days if stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Typically homemade donuts will last for about 3 days when stored properly. You can extend that to 5 days if you refrigerate the donuts after baking.
These donuts are best at room temperature but can be reheated for a warmer donut if you prefer.
These twists are the perfect donut to serve with a sweet sauce. Something as simple as a drizzle of chocolate syrup can be great, but I like making a little ganache or simple chocolate sauce for dipping. It can also be delicious when served with homemade caramel sauce.
