Frequently Asked Questions
Chicken rings are made using chicken breast. It is seasoned with onion, garlic, and salt. The breading is made using breadcrumbs and cornflake crumbs that coat the chicken after it has been dredged in the whisked egg.
This recipe for chicken rings is made using chicken breast. Because of the added fat of the egg, parmesan cheese, and being fried in the oil, you want the leaner chicken breast.
While you can use chicken thighs, the texture doesn't work as well as they are juicier and won't get as crisp. You can, however, use already ground chicken if you prefer over making your own.
Frying the copycat chicken rings gives them the best crunch and works better than baking. If you want to make the chicken rings in the air fryer, you can get the crunch of frying but the healthiness of baking. The air fryer directions are listed below. If you need to bake the rings and do not have an air fryer, you can, but it will be missing the same crunch.
Yes, you can freeze the copycat chicken rings. I like to fry them first. Let the copycat chicken rings cool completely first. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place them in the freezer for 1-2 hours.
Once they are frozen, you can place them in a freezer bag or container. When you are ready to eat them, heat them up in the oven at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes. While they can be reheated in the microwave, they will be soggy and not have the crispiness you are looking for. You can also reheat them in the air fryer or even drop them into a deep fryer for a few minutes if you prefer.
How to Make Chicken Rings in the Air Fryer
Follow the directions up to the point of frying the chicken. Instead of frying in oil, you will place them onto the tray or basket of your air fryer. Cook at 375°F for 5 minutes, then turn them and continue cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes, until they are cooked through and golden.
For added color, spritz the top of the rings with olive oil before cooking.
