Nothing beats the crunch of a chip for a snack. A healthier option that I have loved for many years is this homemade pita chips recipe! It's one of those super easy recipes that just seems like it should be harder to make. Instead, it's a simple recipe you can make in minutes and have on a plate to enjoy. I use this with all of my favorite dips and love serving with many of my favorite Mediterranean-themed meals and am sure you will too!
Pita Chips Recipe
What would you do if I told you that making your own chips for dipping in sauces and dips can be done easily and in less than 30-minutes? This recipe is the perfect snack that is super versatile and easy to add to your meal plan. In fact, it's going to be that one homemade recipe you will start making and serving at every party or event.
Pita chips are made from pitas, and a perfect way to use up any stale pita you might have on hand. They are perfect for dipping with hummus, but I love using pita chips with every one of my favorite dips including this simple creamy blue cheese dip and even this yummy jalapeno dip.
What Seasonings Go On These Chips?
In this recipe, I used a blend of garlic, Italian herbs, salt, and pepper. Most commercial pita chips have just sea salt, but I like to add a bit more flavor to mine. You can also use any herbs you prefer. Oregano, basil, thyme, and parsley can be mixed together for a yummy flavor. Taco seasoning or ranch seasoning blends might be a good choice to try. I've also seen these with Tajin or just a bit of chili powder and some lime juice mixed with olive oil.
Use your imagination and pick seasoning blends that you like to use on other foods. Any traditional potato chip flavor can also be used for great flavor. One of my favorite things to do is pick up popcorn seasoning and use it on homemade pita chips. That makes it even easier to prepare and easily turns it into a delicious snack!
You can even add cinnamon and sugar to turn these into a great snack to go with dessert dips! Serve with this eggless monster cookie dip recipe or pumpkin dip recipe for delicious snacks!
Can I Fry These Instead of Baking?
One of the best parts of pita chips is that they are most often baked instead of fried. Some commercial brands are fried, but generally speaking, you will find pita chips to be a baked snack item.
If you want to fry them, you may do so, but I personally don't recommend doing that. The effort to fry them is much more than simply baking them. Plus, frying pita chips will be messier, less healthy, and may burn much easier than when baked.
What Should I Serve Pita Chips With?
The most obvious choice to pair with pita chips is my homemade hummus recipe. It is a delicious choice that is traditional and super easy to prepare. Other options below are delicious with this chip recipe and sure to be a hit at any party or just for snacking.
- Homemade Tangy Guacamole
- Fresh Avocado Dip with Feta Cheese
- Stove Top Hot Spinach Dip

- 4-Ingredient Fiery Feta Dip

How Can I Make These in My Air Fryer?
I love using my air fryer and found that air fryer chips are a great option for making in this cool kitchen appliance. Simply follow the same method of layering the pita pieces in the basket in an even layer then cook for 6-8 minutes at the same temperature listed.
Since the air fryer basket is smaller than a baking sheet, obviously, you will have to make these in much smaller batches than if making in the oven. Simple cook in multiple batches or prepare only 1 pita at a time for this method.
How Long are Pita Chips Good?
Much like any chip or bread product, pita will go stale quickly. So, if you plan to make these in advance, you have to make sure they are stored properly. If stored in an air-tight container or a large Ziploc bag, they are typically good for up to 1 week. Although you can refrigerate them, I recommend leaving them out on the counter for the best flavor and crispness.

How to Make Homemade Pita Chips
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
Cut the pitas into triangles and then lay in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush both sides of the pita pieces with the olive oil mixture.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the pita is browned and crunchy.
Serve with your favorite hummus, yogurt sauce, or dips.
Chef's Tip
For some great flavors, you can invest in a set of popcorn flavor blends to sprinkle on your pita chips. These are excellent to have on hand for popcorn and chips, but I also use them when grilling chicken or even on salads for a slightly different flavor.
