You probably already dye eggs for the kids to hunt, but why not bring that fun to the dinner table? This recipe takes a classic deviled eggs recipe and turns it up a bit with some food dye to make them pretty and delicious!
Dyed Easter Deviled Eggs Recipe
There are many versions and ideas out there for how to dye deviled eggs for Easter, but this is my favorite. It's simple, fairly fast, and the colors are super-rich and beautiful. Plus, this doesn't change the flavor of the eggs as some methods might.
This is a super fun idea that is perfect for getting kids to try a new dish at the Easter table. It's also great for making to take to family meals or potlucks. Plus, the eggs themselves are absolutely delicious!
How Far Ahead Can I Make Deviled Eggs?
Deviled eggs can be made 2-3 days in advance. For best results, however, it is recommended that you not fill them until time to serve so the filling won't dry out. I recommend preparing the filling and storing it in an air-tight container then placing the egg white halves into a separate air-tight container. When ready to serve, simply pipe the filling into the eggs.
The hard-boiled egg can be prepared up to 5 days ahead of time. If you want to do this, just don't cut them and create the filling until time to serve. While this is possible, the best flavor will be in freshly made eggs served within 2 days or preparing.
Have leftover eggs that won't be deviled? Add them into this tasty Kerala egg curry or turn them into egg salad sandwiches instead!
What is the Best Dye for Easter Deviled Eggs?
When I make this recipe, I reach for the gel food dye that I usually use when preparing icing or baked goods. It is my personal opinion that the gel dye creates a richer color and is easier to work with. You will also find that there are a lot larger variety of colors.
You can also use basic food coloring drops if you prefer. While some mention using things like Kool-Aid or Jello packets to dye the eggs, I find the change in flavor is not pleasant and a poor choice.
How Long Do You Boil Eggs for Deviled Eggs?
There are many different methods for making hard-boiled eggs. Every home cook has their own preference. Additionally, there are many different levels of hard-boiled. For this recipe, you definitely want them completely hard and not soft as the egg yolk is best when completely cooked in deviled eggs. Below are a few methods that are popular and can be considered for this recipe.
- Stovetop method: Place the eggs into a pan and cover completely with water. Bring the water to a roiling boil over high heat, then cover and turn off the heat but leave on the burner. Let them sit for 10 minutes before placing them in an ice bath to stop cooking. Note that extra-large eggs may need 12 minutes.
- Oven method: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place one egg per cup of a muffin pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and place immediately into an ice bath.
- Air Fryer method: Place 6 eggs into the air fryer basket and turn the temperature to 250°F for 16 minutes. For air fryers that start at 300°F, set to that and cook for 12 minutes. Remove immediately and place into an ice bath.
- Instant Pot method: Place 1 cup of cold water into the Instant Pot liner. Place a trivet or steamer basket into the pot and then add eggs. Seal the lid and set the cooker to high pressure for 5 minutes. Once the cooking cycle is done, allow the pressure to naturally release for 5 minutes, then release the remaining pressure. Place the eggs into an ice bath and leave them for 5 minutes before peeling.
Why Are My Eggs So Hard to Peel?
There are many reasons why you may struggle with getting your eggs to peel. When the eggs are too fresh (i.e. fresh from backyard chickens), they will be more difficult to peel. Sometimes, they haven't cooled enough and the membrane hasn't loosened well.
The way I prefer to peel eggs is to place one egg at a time into a mug or cup and shake it vigorously. It will crack the peel well and will make it simple to then peel away.
