I grew up eating biscuit donuts, but this delicious air fryer biscuit donuts recipe is a whole new method! It's delicious, easy to make, ready in just 5-minutes, and a perfect way to add a healthier treat to your day. Using your favorite canned biscuit makes this turn out perfectly, and you can top them with any glaze you prefer!
Air Fryer Biscuit Donuts
Nothing beats a donut for a delicious sweet treat, but it's hard to always have time for homemade donuts. While I love a good yeast donut or even a cake donut, making them for breakfast is a bit more than I can manage on busy weekdays. So, an air fryer semi-homemade donut is the solution! Canned biscuits create a perfect donut that is flaky, light, and easy to customize with your favorite toppings or even fillings.
For those who have a bit more time in the morning for breakfast, there are tons of other great ideas that are perfect for a sweet breakfast. We love this yummy cinnamon French toast bread pudding with glaze because it can be breakfast or dessert. You may also like one of these sweet bread recipes for breakfast. So delicious and easy to prepare.
What Are the Best Biscuits for This Recipe?
You can use any biscuit for this recipe, but I find that the Pillsbury Grands style of biscuit is best. They are large, fluffy, and rise wonderfully. A generic version is of course a good option and will work just as well. If you only have basic biscuits on hand, you can try those, but you may need to check them sooner as they are often smaller and could cook easily in just 3-4 minutes instead of the full 5 minutes.
What Toppings Can I Add to Donuts?
Glaze is amazing on a donut but you may want something different on top. If you prefer something different, there are tons of options that we enjoy. Below are some great ideas for topping your donuts.
- Brush with melted butter then dip into cinnamon sugar.
- Sprinkle the tops with powdered sugar.
- Add sprinkles on top of the glaze.
- Crush cookies or candy and dip the glazed donut into the mixture.
- Use a piping bag and add custard, whipped cream, or preserves inside the biscuits after baking for a filled donuts.
- Spread frosting over the top.
How Do I Fill Air Fryer Biscuits with Custard?
If you decide you want to use this recipe to make a jelly or custard filled donut, you can do that easily with a piping bag. For this, instead of cutting out the donut hole, you would air fry them whole. Pick your preferred custard or jelly filling, then simply insert the end of the piping bag into the biscuit after cooking and gently squeeze in the filling.
Depending upon the custard or whipped cream you add inside your donut, you may want to refrigerate leftovers.
Do These Need to Be Refrigerated?
If making one of the glaze recipes below, you may want to refrigerate if using milk to mix the ingredients. However, if you allow the glaze to dry and harden, it is not necessary to refrigerate. With small batches like this, it is unlikely that you will have any leftovers.
They are good on the counter in an airtight container for 2-3 days. In the refrigerator, you can store them for 4-5 days. When serving after the initial day, they are best reheated to soften. Only 15-20 seconds in the microwave is enough to make them perfect!
Are All Air Fryers the Same?
No. While air fryers, in general, have a similar overall method of cooking, some are designed slightly differently than others. That means that while the cooking time listed below may work on my air fryer, you may need to watch it closely with yours. As with any oven, cooking times and temperatures may vary slightly. When making this donut recipe, I recommend starting with 4 minutes, checking the donuts, then adding additional time in 1-minute increments until they are at the desired doneness.
