Do you love cheese sticks? We sure do! This recipe for your own homemade Babybel fried cheese bites is going to be a favorite in your snack or appetizer routine. These tasty little cheese wheels are always a great addition to your menu, but frying them to create a crispy coating just kicks them up another notch to create a delicious snack or appetizer!
Babybel Fried Cheese Bites
Making homemade cheese sticks is so much better than the frozen variety or even the ones you get in restaurants. These, especially, have a great super melty cheese that pulls apart beautifully and is super tasty. I love the different options of flavors and how this is a great way to save money by making a favorite snack at home.
If you prefer a little bit healthier option, you might like the fast and easy air fryer Babybel cheese bites instead. The same great taste without the deep frying makes them a perfect choice if you are watching what you eat.
What is the Best Coating on the Outside?
The recipe calls for Italian breadcrumbs, but you can use any breadcrumbs you prefer. I like the idea of Panko for a little different texture. Plain or whole wheat breadcrumbs work as well for this recipe, you just want to add a bit more seasoning.
If using plain crumbs, you'll want to add some salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. I would start with just ¼ to ½ teaspoon each of the salt and pepper, but you could add more if you prefer a bit saltier mixture.
What Cheese Flavors Can I Use?
If you want to try something different, the great thing is that Babybel has multiple flavors. Original, light original, white cheddar, gouda, or mozzarella are all options from the Babybel brand of cheese.
You do NOT have to use just Babybel though. If you prefer, you can use any cheese that will melt. cheese sticks, cubed cheese, or cheese curds can all be used with the same process. Smaller pieces, however, will need less cook time.
Can I Use Different Seasonings?
Of course! Italian is classic, but you can use any blend of spices you want in this recipe. Below are a few other options that can create nice flavors that work well with cheese.
- Cajun spice blend
- Taco seasoning blend
- Greek seasoning blend
- Ranch seasoning blend
- Seasoning salt
- Everything but the bagel seasoning
You can always mix and match things like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, chili powder, and cumin to create your own unique flavor profile.
What Dipping Sauces Should I Serve?
We always like to dip our cheese sticks into something. If you and your family like that as well, then you can offer a few different types of dipping sauces. Below are my favorites.
- Marinara or this homemade pasta sauce
- Ranch dressing or dip
- Jalapeno dip
- Blue cheese dressing
- French onion dip
- Dill dip
- Sour cream
Can I Make Homemade Cheese Sticks Ahead of Time?
While you can fry these ahead of time, you will want them to be heated up when serving. If I know I won't have time to fry them when I want to serve them, I will batch make them ahead of time. You can let them cool, then freeze them or refrigerate them and reheat in the microwave, air fryer, or oven when ready to serve.

Chef's Tip
If you have a deep fryer on hand already, this is easier to make with far less mess. Simply drop the coated cheese into the fryer for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown.
How to Make Babybel Cheese Bites
In a shallow dish, mix together the breadcrumbs and Italian seasoning.
In a separate shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs.
In a deep-sided skillet or saucepan, heat at least 1" of oil to 350°F.
