How to Make Funnel Cake Fries
Begin by using a hand or stand mixer to whip together the eggs, milk, water, sugar, and vanilla until frothy.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cinnamon, salt, flour, and baking powder.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, and stir until a thick batter is formed.
Transfer the batter to a piping bag.
Heat oil in a pan to 390°F/180°C. Test the oil by sprinkling a little bit of flour, if it sizzles, the oil is hot enough.
Carefully pipe 2-3 inch lines of batter into the hot oil. You may have to use your fingers or a butter knife to break the batter off.
Fry the batter on both sides for about 45-60 seconds or until golden brown.
Remove from the oil and let drain on paper towels for 1-2 minutes.
Dust with powdered sugar or other toppings such as the strawberry glaze before serving.
Serve immediately and enjoy.
How to Make a Strawberry Glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together the strawberry preserves, milk, and powdered sugar. Drizzle over the fries or serve for dipping.
Chef's Notes
- This recipe can also be used to make funnel cakes, just reduce the flour by half.
- If the batter is too thick to handle, add 1 more tablespoon of water.
- If the batter is taking longer than 1-2 minutes to fry, the oil is not hot enough. Reduce the amount of batter you are adding at a time.
- The batter is not very sweet, the sweetness comes from your toppings.
Frequently Asked Questions
For this recipe, you will need eggs, water, sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, milk, and vanilla extract.
If serving with a strawberry glaze, you will also need powdered sugar, strawberry preserves, and milk or cream. Additionally, you will need oil for frying and powdered sugar or glaze for dipping/dusting.
Funnel cakes are traditionally served with powdered sugar. But don’t stop there—feel free to get creative with your toppings! For example, you can top your funnel cake fries with cinnamon, chocolate chips, sprinkles, or even a drizzle of melted peanut butter. You can make a caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or marshmallow creme sauce for dipping.
Absolutely! Funnel cake fries can be cooked in an air fryer, with a few minor adjustments. Start by pouring the dough into ¾-inch strips or cubes, and place on a parchment-lined basket/tray. Lightly spray the tops with butter or oil spray, then cook them at 375°F for 7–10 minutes. Flip them or turn at the halfway mark. They’ll come out golden brown and delicious every time.
When you place the batter into the bottle or piping bag, you will squeeze the batter into the oil. Instead of doing a traditional funnel cake design, with all of the strips together and overlapping each other, you will squeeze the batter into a fry shape. Do not have the pieces overlapping or touching. This helps the funnel cake fries to shape.
