Rainbow Donuts Kids Breakfast
Why cut a good donut in half to make a rainbow? Because it is fun! Sometimes the ordinary just gets boring, and when you have fun with your food, it's just a great way to make a day better. In our house, the kids always liked when things are colored, decorated, or presented in a fun way, so why not do that with a tasty little donut.
If you want fully homemade, you can always whip up a batch of homemade fluffy pancakes or this easy Belgian waffles recipe instead. Sometimes, though, it's just nice to have a fast and easy option like these.
What is the Best Donut to Use For This?
While you can use any donut you want, I find it is best to use the cake donuts. Any flavor works, but plain cake donuts are my favorite since they are simple vanilla and the icing and cereal on top won't compete with the flavor. Plus, the denser donut just stays together well and is easier to ice.
If using a glazed donut, you may find the icing doesn't want to stick as well on the donut. It may be better to use a thinner icing or glaze and dip the entire donut half, let it sit for a few minutes, then put the decorations on top when still tacky.
What Can I Make the Rainbow Colors With?
For my version, I used Fruity Pebbles cereal. It comes in a variety of colors already and is small enough to easily add to the donut in a rainbow pattern without a struggle. The fun thing though, is that you can use all kinds of foods and items to make your rainbow stripes. Below are a few ideas that I really love the idea of using for this and would definitely consider next time.
- Sprinkles (I even found these cool mini rainbows!)
- Colored sugar
- Dyed icing in stripes
- M&M's candy
- Skittles candy
- Airheads or taffy pieces rolled out
- Fruit flavored Tootsie Rolls rolled out
Can I Make This With Dye Free Colors?
If you have someone in your home who has dye issues, that can be a struggle when making a rainbow. The good thing is there are tons of options for food dying that use herb, fruits, and even vegetables. Of course, you can always look specifically for dye-free cereal, or purchase these dye-free food colors to use on the icing.
It might require a bit of testing, but it's definitely possible to make this donut without dye in ingredients.
What Order do I Add Colors for a Rainbow?
While you don't have to be exact and it's always fun to be creative with your decorating, if you want to do an accurate look, you'll want to follow the ROYGBIV pattern. The order from top to bottom the colors would be as listed below.
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
Since Fruity Pebbles may not have all of those colors, you can do this with just what is available in order. You can, of course, make your rainbow with any of the ideas listed above also.
Ingredients
- Cake donuts
- Fruity Pebbles cereal
- White frosting
- Shredded coconut
