What's the Difference Between a Cake and a Bundt Cake?
The only difference is in the pan they are baked in! A bundt cake is a special fluted pan that often has specific indentations that create a scalloped, floral, or ridged exterior on the cake. It's designed to be beautiful when serving and is especially handy for cakes where you want to serve without icing or only a simple glaze. Almost any cake recipe can be made in a bundt pan with excellent results.
What is the Best Apple for Apple Cake?
For this recipe, using Granny Smith apples is probably the most classic choice. You can, however, use any number of sweet but mild apples. I like the idea of using Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, or even Golden Delicious. Depending upon your preferences, you'll want an apple that is sweet but not overly sweet, and that holds some texture when cooked but will soften easily.
Do I Need to Peel Apples for Apple Cake?
I peeled the apples for this recipe, but it is not necessary. If you wish, you can easily leave the peel on with great results. To save time and make it a bit easier, using an apple peeler is a great idea. These are also pretty fun to use for kids, so often pretty popular when you want to bake with the kids. A vegetable peeler can also be used if you prefer to peel without using a classic paring knife.
Can I Make This in a Regular Cake Pan?
Of course! If you don't have a bundt pan, you can definitely pour this into a regular cake pan to bake. As the cake pan will be different and create a thinner layer, you should cook for less time. I recommend starting with 30 minutes, checking the doneness, and adding 5-minute increments from there until just cooked and a toothpick is clean when inserted in the center.
Should You Refrigerate Apple Cake?
The cake itself does not have to be refrigerated. If you add the powdered sugar glaze made with milk, it's a good idea to refrigerate it until ready to serve or eat. The dairy in the glaze is not safe for leaving out overnight. However, should you leave it out and let the glaze set and harden, it will be safe to leave it out for an extended period of time.

I made this cake on Sunday and it was gone by Wednesday. Everyone that had a piece loved it. I will definitely be making this wonderful apple cake again. Thank you

Sounds like a great recipe. BUT... I want to substitute gluten free flour and use apple cider in place of the milk. Any thoughts??
Katie Hale
While I am sure you could probably make this with a 1:1 gluten free flour blend, I have not done so and cannot offer tips/advice. I would say you can add apple cider, but would only replace 1/2 of the milk with it instead of all.
Chris Gray
Although I can't compare recipe using just milk to what I did- I did substitute cider for all of the milk and it turned out great. I also thinned glaze with cider and added some cinnamon and heated it and had everyone put their own amount of glaze on their own cake. Wonderful recipe.

Can this be frozen?
Katie Hale
Absolutely. Bake as directed, then let it cool completely. Cut into slices, and wrap each slice individually with plastic wrap. Put them into a large freezer storage bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
