Handy Kitchen Tools
You may also prefer to use a deep fryer such as the Fry Daddy to make this. When deep-frying, you'll want to watch carefully to make sure it doesn't bun. I recommend 2 to 3 minutes and check then an additional 1 to 2 minutes at most. You just need to heat this through and crisp the outside as the meat is already cooked.
How to Make Ham and Cheese Cutlets
Cut the ham and cheese to the same sizes then stack them together with ham on the bottom and top.
Whisk your eggs in a small shallow bowl until combined and add a bit of salt and pepper to them if you desire.
Pour the breadcrumbs into a second shallow bowl, then add in some extra herbs or salt if you want to add a bit more flavor. Chili powder, cayenne, paprika, cumin, and Italian herbs are great additions.
Dip the stack of ham and cheese into the eggs until it is coated on all sides.
Then roll it into the breadcrumbs making sure it is coated well and the breadcrumbs cover all of the meat and cheese.
Heat your preferred frying oil in a skillet over medium heat, then cook the cutlet on all sides until golden brown.
You can also drop it into a deep fryer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
Remove from the pan and let it drain, or pat off any excess oil before you serve with a favorite dipping sauce.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is a unique twist on a classic ham and cheese sandwich with a bit of a mozzarella stick style. The ingredients are stacked and breaded then fried rather than being put between slices of bread.
This can be eaten like a sandwich but is best and easiest when served with a knife and fork alongside your favorite side dishes or a dipping sauce.
I like to use a seasoned breadcrumb when making this cutlet. This adds a lot of seasoning to the sandwich. You can also use panko bread crumbs to add even more crunch.
If you need a bread crumb alternative, you can make your own using croutons. Take salad croutons and pulse them in the food processor. Since croutons are seasoned, in a wide range of flavors, you can add extra flavor to the ham and cheese cutlets.
This was in a circle for convenience, but you can make this in any shape you want. It is easiest if your cheese and ham are the same sizes so that it coats well and every bite includes both ingredients. That can be in a circle, square, rectangle, or you can use cookie cutters to cut them into fun shapes for the kids.
There are so many sauces that you can serve with ham and cheese cutlets. You can serve it with a basic marinara sauce or you can use a mustard sauce, like honey mustard. You can use ranch dressing or get creative with a pesto sauce. This sandwich can even be served with salsa or a cheese sauce.
The sauce can be added to the top of the ham and cheese stack after it has been fried, or you can serve it with a variety of sauces for dipping. Use what you prefer and offer a few different options for others to choose from.
Can I Make This in My Air Fryer?
Using an air fryer is a popular option for cutting back on fat when you want a crispy coating but don't want to fry something. This recipe is one that does very well in the air fryer.
Rather than cooking in the oil, place it into your air fryer at 350°F and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the cutlet over and continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes.
If you want the nice golden brown color on the outside of the ham and cheese, you will want to spritz the outside of the cutlet with olive oil spray before placing it into the air fryer.
If you don't have an air fryer already, then check out these great options that we love. I use the Cosori or the Instant Vortex most often in my kitchen.
