How to Make Green Onion Dumpling Chips
Start by dicing the green onion into small pieces. I prefer using just the green of the onion, but you can use the green and white, depending upon your personal flavor preferences.
On a clean surface, line the dumplings up and sprinkle a pinch of water on top of each one. Then, sprinkle on a pinch of salt and green onions.
To help keep the onions on the dumpling wrapper, roll them slightly until you place into the hot oil.
Now, heat the vegetable oil in a large deep skillet or fryer, and once hot, drop the dumplings in, 2 to 3 at a time, and cook for 30 seconds then flip and cook for another 30 seconds. They should be crisp and golden brown with bubbles.
Drain on paper towels then add salt or sesame seeds if desired. Repeat the process until all of the dumplings have been cooked. If you prefer smaller pieces, you can cut the dumplings in half or into triangles to resemble a traditional "chip" shape.
Serve immediately or allow them to cool and store them in an airtight container or storage bag.
Serve alone or with dipping sauces.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can use homemade dumpling dough if you want. I know sometimes you want to use your favorite recipe or want to control the ingredients. However, I am using ready-made dumpling wrappers because it is faster and easier.
You can also use egg roll wrappers but will want to cut them into quarters for at least, a smaller-sized snack.
You want to use an oil to fry the dumpling chips in that has a decently high smoke point. I like to use peanut oil because it has the highest smoke point. Sometimes, people have allergies to peanuts and they need a different oil. I like to use vegetable oil in that case. Canola oil is another option that may be preferred.
This recipe should not be made with olive oil or avocado oil as they are used more for flavor and would not benefit this snack.
There are a lot of flavors that will pair well with the dumpling chips. I tend to pair the chips with sour cream with teriyaki sauce or soy sauce. You could also use any of these alone.
The chips can also be used with ranch, french onion, salsa, or even a queso dip. Dumpling chips can be paired with almost any flavor that goes well with green onion flavor.
Because the dumpling wrappers do not have a strong flavor they can be paired with almost anything. You can get very creative about adding flavors. Adding in different combinations of seasonings and herbs can change the taste completely.
You can add garlic with onion powder and smoked paprika. Or you could use curry powder, cumin, and chili powder. The options are endless for the different flavors you could create.
Another amazing combination is to use finely grated Parmesan cheese and fresh cracked black pepper. You can really use your imagination when it comes to the flavors. I have even seen people add chocolate chips to the dough before frying them.
