How to Make a Chicken Puff Pastry Braid
Video Recipe
If you are using pre-cooked chicken, shred and set aside. If not, cover the chicken with water in a medium stockpot, and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, cook for 15 minutes, or until cooked through and easy to shred.
Now, preheat the oven to 340°F/170°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper then set it aside.
In a large bowl, combine the cream cheese with the honey and parmesan. Once it is combined, add in the chicken and then stir until the chicken is coated. Then set this away.
Next, roll out the puff pastry and spread the chicken mixture in the middle of the pastry in a line lengthwise.
On the outer sides (⅓ per side), slice the dough at an angle.
Then, pull the dough up and over the filling weaving back and forth so they cross over in diagonal lines.
In a small bowl, melt the butter and whisk with garlic and parsley.
Then, brush this over the braid.
Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, until it is golden brown and bubbling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Aleppo is a type of pepper that originates from Syria. It is named after the city it comes from, which is located in the northwestern part of the country. Aleppo peppers have a moderate heat level and a slightly fruity flavor. The peppers are often used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.
If you’ve never tried Aleppo pepper, it might be difficult to know what it tastes like. The flavor of Aleppo is often described as being similar to a cross between cumin and paprika. It has a slightly smoky taste with just a hint of heat. Because of its moderate heat level, Aleppo pepper is a good choice for those who don’t like spicy food but still want to add a little bit of flavor to their dishes
If you can't find Aleppo pepper honey, don't worry! You can use the same amount of honey as shown, and then add a bit of cayenne, paprika, and a pinch of red pepper flakes to taste.
This recipe is very versatile. If you are not a huge fan of chicken or just want to make something different, it's easy to adjust. Other options included shredded turkey or pork. Beef can work, but doesn't pair as nicely as poultry.
Other options include using a vegan chicken substitute, shrimp, or even mushrooms. Firm tofu can work but must be cooked well before mixing to preserve the right texture.
Yes, you can freeze a puff pastry pull apart bread. Just make sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. When you're ready to eat it, thaw the bread in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat it in a 350-degree oven for about 10 minutes.
This is good for around 3 months if stored properly in the freezer. Make sure the bag or container is labeled with the recipe name and date made so you know how long it is still good in your freezer.
Puff pastry works best for this recipe since it is flaky and has a nice rise once baked. If you do not have any on hand, you can also use a simple pastry dough or a crescent roll. The rolls of pastry found in the refrigerated dairy section are a great option for this when puff pastry isn't available.
Chef's Tip
Save time and money by purchasing bulk amounts of chicken when it is on sale. This is ideal for bone-in chicken breasts so you can then cook them down shred the meat, and save the broth for future recipes. Once you have cooked and shredded the chicken, save it in 1 cup portions in the freezer for up to 4 months. Just date and label the bags for convenience.
