Ingredients
- 12 Double stuffed Oreos
- 1 cup Red candy melts
- 1 cup White candy melts
- 1 cup Blue candy melts
- Patriotic sprinkles
Note: Almond bark may be used in place of the candy melts if desired. Just color with a dot of gel food coloring to create the blue and red color you desire.
Handy Kitchen Supplies
It can also be handy to have a double boiler or shallow bowls that are microwave-safe for melting the candy melts. These will help you melt the candy safely without burning it or causing it to break down.
How to Make Dipped Oreo Cookies
In a separate bowl for each color, melt the white candy melts in 30-second increments in the microwave, or over a double boiler.
Now, you will dip the end of a straw into the white candy melts, then into the creme filling of the Oreo. Hold this to secure in place. You may need to smooth the chocolate a bit where it is secured to the filling.
Now, repeat this process until all of the cookies have a straw/stick attached. Then, you will melt the blue and red candy melts as you did the white melts earlier.
Dip the cookies into the colored melts, coating the cookie as desired, then laying on a piece of parchment paper to solidify. You may need to scrape excess candy off the cookie into the bowl as you do so.
As soon as they are on the parchment paper, add sprinkles then let them set up, for 20 to 30 minutes. Store in an airtight container until ready to serve.
Chef's Tips
- If the candy melts or chocolate is too thick after melting, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to thin the mixture.
- Do not refrigerate or freeze to solidify the chocolate. This will cause discoloration.
- Let them harden completely before you store them together so they do not stick together.
Frequently Asked Questions
I love using candy melts for dipping Oreos but almond bark also works. Using candy melts, the candies come colored and it saves time. Some people prefer to color the chocolate themselves to get the color exactly as they want it. It is up to you, your budget, and your preferences.
You can use separate bowls and melt different colors of candy melts in each one. Mix the colors together or add in food coloring to get different shades if desired. For a really easy option, you could also just buy pre-colored chocolate wafers in red, white, and blue.
Dipped Oreos will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks when they are stored in an airtight container at room temperature. The chocolate should keep the cookies from getting stale, but they may get a bit soft over time.
You do not need to refrigerate chocolate-dipped Oreos. Oreos do not need to be refrigerated and neither does the melted candy coating. Storing the Oreos in the refrigerator can cause the chocolate to get hard and brittle, so it’s best just to leave them at room temperature.

- Use candy canes or candy sticks instead of paper straws as a "stick" for Oreo pops so the whole thing is edible.
