Blustery, fall nights are the perfect time to stay in and enjoy a hearty, homemade pizza. It’s the end of the week, you’re too tired to spend hours slaving over a stove but take-away isn’t always on the cards.
Homemade pizza can be prepared in a matter of minutes, and it takes under 20 minutes to cook. In fact, if you use pre-prepared dough then you can get the whole process done in under half an hour.
If you’re going to make your own dough, the process is slightly longer. Making the dough takes about 15 minutes, but you’ll want to factor in time to rise.

What Do I Need for a Homemade Pizza?
Every pizza needs three basic ingredients: crust, sauce, and toppings. What type of these you will use varies greatly, and below we are going to showcase not just pizzas but also dough recipes!
If you like a deep pan pizza, then you really want to leave the dough to rise overnight. If you prefer a thinner, crispier base, you only need to give it 15 – 30 minutes.
Another great thing about homemade pizzas is the fact that it’s a fun, easy meal that you can prepare as a family. Kids and adults alike can top and decorate their pizzas with their favorite flavors easily.
You can prepare and put your toppings out for everyone to choose from. This also works really well for birthday parties or social gatherings. It’s a really easy way to make sure everyone eats what they like, especially if you have fussy eaters or people with special dietary needs.
So, to keep things fresh, and to help you make the most of seasonal flavors and ingredients, we’ve got some interesting new recipes to try.
What Do I Cook Pizza On?
Traditional pizzas are cooked in a brick oven where they are slid from a paddle onto the base of the oven and cooked directly against that brick. At home, however, we tend to grab a pizza pan or stone. Below are my favorites to use.
- 12" Deep Dish Chicago Style Pizza Pan
- 12" Round Pizza Stone
- 16" Rectangular Pizza Stone
- 14" Cast Iron Pizza Pan
- 14" Steel Crisper Pizza Pan
- 14" Classic Steel Non-Stick Pizza Pan
Types of Homemade Pizza Dough
Some of the following recipes provide instructions for making dough, while others suggest store-bought dough. Either is absolutely fine.
If you do want to make your own dough, you only need a few ingredients and about 15 minutes of time.
Pizza dough can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator or dropped in the freezer if you want to save it for later. We suggest always having some pizza dough in the freezer for those Friday nights!
If you don’t have a favorite or family pizza dough recipe, here are some of our favorites.
1. The Best Pizza Dough Recipe
With a name like this one, there’s a lot to live up to! If you follow the recipe and method, you will end up with some really incredible dough.
The best thing about this recipe is that it uses only 6 ingredients, and they’re all pantry staples. You won’t find yourself wandering around looking for obscure flour if you’re going to make this dough.
2. Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
If you’re avoiding processed wheat, then this whole wheat pizza dough could be the best choice. Again, it’s a simple recipe with readily available ingredients.
The addition of the Parmesan in the dough gives this pizza a wonderful cheesy flavor that is to die for!
3. Stuffed Crust Pizza Dough
Stuffed crust pizza dough is my absolute favorite! It’s extra cheesy and incredibly satisfying.
If you want to make a stuffed crust pizza, you absolutely can! This recipe is slightly more involved and requires some less common ingredients. You should be able to find them in most grocery stores.
That being said, it’s absolutely easy enough to make at home!
The Best Homemade Pizza Recipes
1. Fall Harvest Pizza
Our first recipe uses roasted fall vegetables like butternut squash and carrots. You can’t get more ‘fall’ than that!
This is a beautiful pizza to taste and to look at! The bright orange of the squash and the yellow, purple, and oranges of the rainbow carrots looks amazing!
The pancetta and ricotta cheese adds an incredible salty taste to the freshness of the fall vegetables. It is just incredible.
2. Fennel and Sausage Pizza
This recipe calls for cooked Italian sausage and some fresh fennel. It’s a hearty and homely meal with a real authentic Italian flavoring.
Fennel is known for its light anise flavoring. It’s not overwhelming like licorice sticks, instead the flavor is quite a light and lifting taste. It is commonly used in Italian cooking, which means that it is right at home on your pizza.
3. Maple Apples, Blue Cheese and Bacon
A great way to use up your fall apples is to use them on your pizza!
By covering the apples in maple syrup, you get an excellently sweet topping on your pizza that contrasts beautifully with the saltiness of the cheese and bacon.
When your pizza is cooked, you can add a drizzle of maple syrup over the top as a garnish! Trust us, it is delicious!
4. Garlic Mushroom Pizza
This pizza is phenomenal! Like actually incredible!
It’s a white base pizza, which means that there’s no tomato sauce on the base. It’s all cheese and toppings, and the toppings on this pizza are delicious.
The caramelized mushrooms carry the garlic flavor beautifully and the lemon finish is so zesty and bright.
5. Barbecue Chicken
Barbecue sauce makes an excellent replacement for the traditional tomato base. It adds a bit of sweetness and spice to the pizza that just can’t be beaten.
This recipe also calls for 3 different cheeses including ricotta, mozzarella, and blue cheese. These add dimension to the flavor of this pizza. It’s reminiscent of wings and dips at your favorite bar.
6. Chicago Style Deep-Dish Pizza
If you’re a fan of deep-dish pizzas, then this pizza is for you!
With the steep, buttery crust and the huge layer of cheese, the Chicago deep dish pizza is iconic. It takes a bit more preparation and a little longer in the oven, but it is worth it!
7. Truffle Mushroom Pizza
Another white pizza, which is also known as a pizza Bianca, this pizza is topped with a variety of different mushroom species. They have a rich, earthy taste which really comes to the forefront when they’re drizzled in truffle oil.
8. Sicilian Pizza with Eggplant
This is a bit of a twist on your traditional pizza. It uses a ciabatta base rather than your traditional pizza base. It also uses crème Fraiche instead of tomato sauce.
Loaded up with eggplant, pine nuts, and sultanas, this pizza is absolutely delicious. It’s a bit more refined than your traditional pepperoni pizza, so you can easily serve this at a fancy dinner party.
9. Vegan Broccoli Pizza
If you’re vegan, you can still enjoy delicious pizzas!
This recipe is loaded with flavor thanks to the broccoli, tomato, and corn. Everything becomes slightly toasted in the oven, which gives this pizza an awesome texture.
Instead of the usual tomato sauce, this recipe calls for cashew cream. It has a great texture that prevents the pizza from drying out.
10. Breakfast Pizza
Two of the best foods in the world, pizza and eggs, meet in this recipe. I cannot tell you just how amazing this pizza is.
You have a whole smorgasbord of meats from sausage to black pudding on this pizza. Coupled with mozzarella, some chili flakes, and Worcester sauce, the flavors in this pizza are incredible!
11. Chicken Tikka Masala
Another cuisine crossing pizza, this one is great for fans of Indian food. The warmer, exotic flavors of the masala go surprisingly well with the softer, cheesy pizza.
What makes this pizza work so well is that masala is a tomato-based sauce which means that it feels right at home on a pizza.
12. Thanksgiving Leftover Pizza
Is there anything that screams ‘fall’ more than Thanksgiving? Perhaps Halloween, but Thanksgiving is at the top of the list.
If you have any Thanksgiving leftovers, you can put them on your pizza for a wonderful holiday treat. You can put almost anything on your pizza, but we recommend turkey, sprouts, and cranberry.
Instead of tomato sauce, you’re going to want to use mashed yams or mashed sweet potato. The texture will take some getting used to, but we promise it is actually amazing!
13. Chipotle Cajun Shrimp
If you’re not a fan of seafood pizza, you might want to skip this one. However, we can thoroughly recommend this pizza. The chipotle sauce adds a nice bit of heat that is much appreciated on a cold fall morning.
14. Deep Dish Apple Pizza
There’s nothing so American or appetizing as apple pie! This recipe brings the all-American apple pie to the Italian pizza.
Instead of having a flaky crust, this apple pie pizza holds the filling in a soft pizza base.
15. Chicken Enchilada Pizza
If you’re tired of taco Tuesdays, change things up with this enchilada pizza. Topped with jalapeños, avocado, chilies and chicken, this pizza is awesome to warm you up.
