How to Make Pork Sausage Fried Rice
Start by chopping the onions and garlic so they are ready when needed. Then cut your sausage into bite-sized pieces and set it aside. Whisk the eggs in a small bowl until combined and light.
Now, add the oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Add in the onions and cook them, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes until they are nicely softened.
Then, add in the minced garlic and continue cooking, stirring regularly, for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
Add the chopped sausage into the skillet and cook it for another 2 to 3 minutes until it has begun to brown and is sizzling.
Next, move the ingredients to one side of the pan, and pour in the beaten eggs.
Cook the eggs, pushing them around until just set, for about 2 minutes. Once set, pull the vegetables and pork back with them and stir to combine well.
Now, add the rice along with the sauces. Soy sauce, fish sauce, and sriracha along with salt are added now. Stir until everything is incorporated well, then cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is all heated through and has some color.
Serve with additional chopped green onions if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
When it comes to fried rice, you’ll want to use long-grain rice. This type of rice is less sticky than other varieties, so it will hold up better during the frying process. Basmati or jasmine rice are both good choices for this dish.
Ultimately, however, the best texture comes from leftover cooked rice. So, if planning this recipe, I recommend cooking the rice the night before and refrigerating it until ready to prepare this meal.
If you’re not a fan of pork sausage, you can easily substitute it with another protein. Chicken, shrimp, and tofu are all great options. You can also use ground pork, chopped pork loin, or even pulled pork that is already cooked. Ground beef or steak is another option for making fried rice at home. Just make sure to cook the protein before adding it to the fried rice.
You may be used to seeing peas and carrots or even corn mixed into your fried rice. That is often a common addition and can be excellent for adding flavor and texture. It's also a great way to stretch the meal a bit further.
Common options that would work include corn, carrots, peas, onions, bell peppers, broccoli, squash, zucchini, or snow peas. It's also a perfect time to toss in a few leftover pieces of roasted vegetables if you happen to have them on hand.
This dish is best served fresh, but leftovers are still delicious! Cooked pork fried rice will last in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat, simply add it to a skillet over medium heat and cook until warmed through. You can also reheat it in the microwave. Just place it in a microwave-safe dish and heat for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through.
If the pork sausage fried rice tastes dry when you reheat it, you can add a little chicken broth or water to moisten it up.
Yes, you can freeze fried rice! Let the dish cool completely before transferring it to a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to eat, thaw the frozen fried rice in the fridge overnight. Reheat it in a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave. Add a little chicken broth or water if it looks dry.
