Stuffed Crust Cast Iron Pizza
Craving pizza but don't want to order out? This stuffed crust cast iron pizza recipe is the perfect solution. It's easy to make, and you can customize it with your favorite toppings.
Cast iron makes the crust crispy and gives it a delicious flavor that you won't find with other types of pizzas. I find this is close to what I grew up having at Pizza Hut. The crust is almost fried as it bakes, and that gives a unique and delicious texture to the crust. Plus, the cheese is stuffed right into the crust, so you'll get a little bit of everything in every bite.

What Toppings Go On Pizza?
If you like pizza, then you already know there is no limit to what you can put on top of that sauce and crust. I love a simple vegetable pizza, but others love them loaded with meats. Below are some common additions you can put on this pizza to make it your own.
- Proteins: pepperoni, salami, ham, bacon, ground beef, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, or grilled chicken.
- Vegetables: tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, spinach, squash, zucchini, carrots, or mushrooms.
- Miscellaneous: pineapple, black olives, green olives, roasted garlic cloves, jalapeno slices, banana peppers.
Ingredients
- 1 pkg prepared pizza dough
- 2 tablespoons pizza sauce
- 2 ounces sliced fresh mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 10 slices pepperoni
- ¼ bell pepper sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Handy Kitchen Tools
Note: If you do not have a cast iron skillet, you can still use a pizza pan to make this recipe. Below are a few favorites we recommend.

How to Make Cast Iron Pizza
Preheat the oven to 500°F/260°C and grease a cast iron skillet with olive oil.
Set the skillet on the stovetop on medium heat.
Once the oil and pan are hot, carefully roll the pizza dough out and lay it inside the pan. You want it to sizzle as it hits the skillet. Leave enough dough over the sides to fold over the cheese on the crust.
Now, place the sliced mozzarella on the dough just inside the edge inside the pan. Fold the excess dough over this and crimp to seal against the bottom of the dough.
Next, spread your favorite pizza sauce over the bottom of the dough.
Top with shredded mozzarella, then pepperoni, and sliced bell peppers.
Season the top with a bit of olive oil, salt, black pepper, and/or Italian seasoning.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the dough is cooked through and the top is melty and browned.
Let stand 5 minutes before slicing to serve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cast irons are known for things sticking if the skillet isn't seasoned well before using or it isn't maintained properly. But actually when they are taken care of, most things will not stick to the cast iron skillet.
If you're worried about the pizza dough sticking to the skillet, don't be! I recommend coating the skillet with olive oil or vegetable oil before placing the dough into it as the recipe shows. It should easily loosen with a spatula once it comes out of the oven.
There are so many different types of cheese that you could use for this recipe, but we prefer mozzarella. It's a classic pizza cheese that melts well and has a neutral flavor that goes well with any topping.
Some use string cheese which is a type of mozzarella, but I prefer freshly sliced mozzarella inside the crust for a creamier result.
You can use any cheese you prefer such as cheddar, jack, fontina, gouda, or even goat cheese or feta for a salty twist. No matter what you choose to stuff the crust with, make sure it is in even slices so it melts nicely when cooked.
Yes! If you're looking for a crispy crust and don't want to heat up your kitchen, cooking the pizza on the grill is a great option. Just be sure to preheat the grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit before adding the pizza.
Place the cast iron skillet on the grill and cook for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
If you're cooking the pizza on the grill, be sure to close the lid so that the heat can evenly cook the crust, and check halfway through the cooking time.
If you're new to cooking with cast iron, you might be wondering how to season it. Seasoning is an important part of taking care of your skillet, and it's really easy to do.
Simply rub a thin layer of oil all over the inside and outside of the skillet. Then, place it in a 400-degree oven for about an hour. This will help to create a non-stick surface and prevent rust.
Once you've seasoned your skillet, it's important to maintain it. Be sure to wash it with hot water and mild soap after each use. Yes, you can use a small amount of soap on the skillet, contrary to popular belief.
Then, dry it completely and rub a thin layer of oil on the surface. This will help to keep it seasoned and prevent it from rusting.
