If you have extra pears, you might also want to make our flaky pear turnovers too! They are so tasty and super easy to make! And, if you want something different but similar, these baked apples with oatmeal topping are spectacular.
What Should I Top Baked Pears With?
Since these pears are already stuffed with cheese, nuts, and berries, they may not need any additional topping. However, I always like to have options for adding some contrast.
An extra drizzle of honey on top is always a nice addition. You can easily replace that with maple syrup, agave syrup, or even a fruit syrup blend if you wish. I love the idea of drizzling the top with some fresh pear syrup, cranberry syrup, or even a little caramel syrup instead for extra flavor.
A bit of vanilla bean ice cream or fresh homemade whipped cream can also be excellent for topping the baked pears for a contrast in texture and temperatures. In a pinch, a sprinkle of powdered sugar or even just some Cool Whip can be added. It's a lovely combination that really makes them a bit more elegant to serve.
Ingredients
- 2 bartlett pears
- 4 ounces brie cheese (125 g)
- 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts (20 g)
- 2 tablespoons dried cranberries (20 g)
- 4 tablespoons honey
Handy Kitchen Tools
Tip: Using a melon baller makes removing the seeds and core easy while keeping the rest of the pear shape in tact. You can simply cut this out with a knife, but I like the presentation of the small round cavity in the center.
How to Make Baked Stuffed Pears
Line a baking sheet or baking dish with parchment paper then set aside. Preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C.
Wash and prepare the pears by removing the stems then cutting them in half lengthwise.
Use a spoon or melon baller to remove the core and seeds from the center of the pears then place them onto the lined baking sheet.
Add a piece of brie to the cavity of each pear.
Then top with chopped nuts and dried cranberries.
Drizzle the top of each pear with honey.
Bake for 20 minutes or until the pears are softened and beginning to brown slightly.
Serve hot with an additional drizzle of honey, syrup, whipped cream, or a scoop of ice cream.
Frequently Asked Questions
Baked pears are a delicious and healthy treat but just like apples, some pears are better for baking than others. Some pears will fall apart when baked and some will not get soft. There are many different types of pears that can be used for baking, but the most popular type is the Bartlett pear. Other good baking pears include Bosc, Anjou, and Comice pears.
When choosing a pear for baking, it is important to choose one that is ripe but not too ripe. If the pear is too ripe, it will fall apart when baked. If the pear is not ripe enough, it will not be as sweet and will not get soft when baked. You want the pear to be soft to the touch but not mushy.
When making these stuffed baked pears, you will bake them in the oven for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on the pears starting at 18 minutes if the pears are smaller or the pears are larger, it might take a slightly longer time.
This is really a personal choice. Leaving the skin on or peeling it off won't make a difference in the way the pears bake and it will not affect the flavor.
The peels do become a little tougher when heated, so if you want to have the pears softer and have a melt in your mouth taste. Some people enjoy the tougher outside of the pears since everything in this recipe is creamy and smooth, except for the skin and the cranberries.
If you don't have brie, you could also use another type of cheese such as goat cheese, cream cheese, or Camembert. Most people choose Camembert as the first choice when substituting brie. Some people say that Coulommiers cheese is a distant cousin of brie so it will also work well in this recipe. Even cream cheese or goat cheese will give you that same creamy texture as well as brie with a mild flavor.
