What Toppings Can I Add to Pizza?
The best thing about making your own pizza is that you can add any toppings you want. I love adding lots of veggies to my pizza and this one is a great way to add more vegetables to your diet. Below are some vegetables that are tasty and work great on pizza.
- Black or green olives
- Red, yellow, or white onions
- Red, orange, yellow, or green bell peppers
- Mushrooms
- Diced tomatoes
- Jalapeno slices
- Zucchini, squash, broccoli, or cauliflower
You could also add meat to your pizza if you wanted. For those who eat meat, this is a great way to make pizza a bit more satisfying, and a fun way to use bits of leftovers from other meals. Just make sure whatever meat you choose is cooked through before adding it to the pizza.
- Italian sausage, chicken sausage, or turkey sausage
- Pepperoni or salami
- Bacon crumbles
- Seasoned ground beef, ground turkey, or ground pork
- Grilled or baked diced chicken breasts
Of course, two other ways to customize your pizza are to add different cheese and sauces. I love mozzarella, but sometimes a bit of cheddar, Parmesan, gouda, or fontina cheese can really add flavor. Good goat cheese or feta adds a hint of saltiness and flavor that is unexpected.
As for sauces, classic marinara, olive oil and garlic, barbecue sauce, alfredo sauce, buffalo sauce, and even Ranch dressing can all be used with great results and different flavors.

How to Make Stuffed Crust Pizza
In a medium bowl, mix together the warm water, sugar, and yeast and let it sit for 8 minutes.
Then, in a large mixing bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, salt, and olive oil until combined.
Now, add the yeast to the flour mixture, and stir well with a spoon until it begins to form a dough.
Lightly flour a clean surface, transfer the dough to the surface and begin kneading it until it becomes an elastic smooth dough. Add additional flour in ¼ cup increments as needed.
Now, oil a large bowl and add the ball of dough to it then cover with a damp towel and let it stand for around 1 hour and 30 minutes until it has risen and doubled in size.
Prepare the vegetables by slicing or chopping them into small pieces. Additionally, cut mozzarella cheese into ½" sticks to go inside the crust if not using string cheese.
Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and place it on a lightly floured clean surface.
Roll the dough into a rectangle or circle, depending upon the pan being used.
Carefully, transfer the dough to the baking pan, and then preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C.
Make sure some dough is overlapping all sides of the pizza pan, then place a cheese stick all around the outside edge.
Then, fold the dough over the cheese stick and pinch it into place.
Mix together the melted butter and dried Italian herbs in a small bowl, then brush this around the crust and cover the edges holding the cheese.
Then, spread pizza sauce all over the crust in an even layer.
Spread the top with around ½ of the shredded cheese.
Top with sliced vegetables as desired.
Then add the additional cheese on top and sprinkle the dried oregano over the top of the pizza.
Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until cooked through and the top is browned nicely.
Let it stand for 10 minutes before slicing to serve.
Frequently Asked Questions
The stuffed crust of stuffed crust pizza is usually stuffed with cheese. Extra mozzarella is made directly into the crust of the pizza so that you get the extra cheesy bite at the end. I have seen some pizza recipes that use pepperoni or other toppings that are also added to the crust. This can be a bit trickier but it is possible.
I like using string cheese because it melts wonderfully and is already portions and shaped ideally to go inside the crust.
I love making the homemade crust for homemade stuffed crust. But sometimes, I don't have time to make fresh dough. In those cases, I do use store-bought or ready-made crust. You don't want to use the ready-made pizza crusts, however. You won't be able to manipulate the crust into making the stuffed crust.
If you want to use a ready-made dough to make the stuffed crust pizza look in the refrigerated section for the pizza dough that is in the tubes or some stores sell pizza dough by the ball in plastic bags.
I like to get the stuffed crust pizzas ready to bake and have everything on them and then freeze them. It is a great way to have frozen pizza on hand. Then you can take it from the freezer and bake it like you would with other frozen pizzas.
I have also frozen homemade pizza dough. Just make sure to thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before using it.
I am not a fan of freezing-cooked stuffed pizza. The crust never gets as crispy when I reheat it. It can be done and if that isn't important to you, you might enjoy frozen homemade stuffed crust pizza.
I recommend reheating it in the oven and not the microwave to get some of the crispiness back.
