Handy Kitchen Tools
How to Make Homemade Stromboli
Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper then set it aside.
On a clean surface, sprinkle a bit of flour, then roll out the pizza dough into a nice-sized rectangle around ¼" thick.
Spread the pesto sauce over the center of the dough leaving a few inches on all sides empty.
Top the pesto with pepperoni.
Then top with sliced Proscuitto, ham, or smoked pork neck.
Top with salami slices.
Add sliced or shredded mozzarella to cover the top of the meats.
Then add your sliced or chopped bell peppers and basil leaves.
Fold over the two ends of the dough to cover the edges of the filling.
Then roll the dough into a log, starting closest to yourself and rolling tightly away tucking all of the fillings into the dough.
Place onto your prepared baking sheet and then brush the top with olive oil.
Use a knife to slice every 2" along the top of the dough.
Place into the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the dough is golden brown on top and the filling is heated through with melted cheese.
Let the stromboli stand for 10 minutes before slicing into 1" rounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Typically you will want to use pizza dough. When I have time, I like to make homemade dough but you can also buy store-bought frozen dough or talk to your local pizza place and pick up just raw dough. Many times they will sell just the pizza dough they use. You can also use a dough mix as a way to make dough. Another option is to use crescent roll dough, refrigerated pizza dough, or you could even use biscuit dough if you wanted something thicker.
In my three meat and cheese stromboli I am using pepperoni, prosciutto and salami. You can also use chicken, ham, bacon, ground beef, Italian sausage, or really any meat you like.
No, you don’t have to use pesto. You can use any type of pizza sauce, pasta sauce, or even alfredo sauce. I love the flavor that pesto adds but feel free to use your favorite sauce.
I love adding vegetables to my stromboli. Sometimes I just make vegetable stromboli instead of using meat. If you want a vegetarian stromboli, leave out the meat and just add more vegetables like bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, and similar. Other options include tomatoes, olives, kale, or even banana peppers or pepperocini.
Typically, I use mozzarella cheese. It gives that typical pizza flavor. That doesn't mean it is the only option. You can use almost any kind of melty cheese that you like.
When I make buffalo chicken stromboli, I like to use cheddar cheese. It gives it a nice tangy flavor. Other options include things like gouda, provolone, pepper jack, feta, goat cheese, or fontina. Of course, Parmesan is always a great addition, but not for melting like others. It's one cheese I would add only in smaller amounts as an accent with others that melt better.
Yes, you can freeze homemade stromboli. I like to freeze them before they get baked so that I can cook them later. When I am ready to bake them, I just let them thaw out and then cook according to the instructions. They come out great every time.
You can also freeze the stromboli after it has been baked. Just let it cool and then place it in a freezer-safe bag or container. When you are ready to eat it, just reheat it in the oven until warmed through. Of course, I much prefer to slice cooked stromboli before storing them in the freezer so you can reheat a slice at a time easily.
What Do I Serve with Stromboli?
This is really an all-in-one meal much like any other pizza-flavored item. However, you can easily serve it with traditional sides like a nice salad or even just additional things like cheesy garlic bread.
And of course, a nice bit of our homemade pasta sauce is nice to serve on the side for dipping the stromboli or garlic bread into. And if you are adventurous and ake something a bit different, you could even offer up this buffalo sauce for dipping.
